Red Sea / Al Hodeidah

Al Hodeidah, a city at the Red Sea where the architecture is quite different from Sana'a and other parts of the country. founded in the 16th century, the city only really grew in the 19th century, during the second ottoman occupation. it was often bombarded, thus numerous old buildings were destroyed. the first bombardments were in 1911 by the italians warring against turkey, then again in 1915 by the english who subsequently occupied the city from 1919 until 1921.

today it is said to be the most important port city in the country (just before Aden at the Indian Ocean). today's modern port was constructed by the former soviet union, upon request of Imam Ahmed. Al Hodeidah brusquely grew again in 1990, with the arrival of yemenis expelled from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait (following the Gulf War and Yemen's support of Saddam Hussein).
